Description of plants

The plant does not have the classic root, stem and leaves because it belongs to a special group of plant organisms whose litter is composed of algae and fungi. It consists of an upright, bushy litter up to 10 cm high, which is fixed to the surface of the ground with short, conical organs. The side of the lichen facing the sun is olive brown-green, and the underside is light gray, with white spots. The branches of lichens are grooved, dilated at the top and irregularly ciliated. The lower parts of the litter are reddish in color. In the fresh state, the lichen is soft and leathery-tough, while in the dry state it is brittle and fragile, and much lighter in color. Iceland moss has no flowers. It does not tolerate polluted air.

Use

Iceland moss tea is used to treat colds and inflammation because it cleanses and strengthens the lungs. In addition, it cleanses and strengthens the mucous membrane of the stomach, intestines, and against diarrhea, it is also recommended for healthy people for occasional cleansing and strengthening of the mucous membrane. It can serve as a substitute for cereals; from the lichen dried on the fire and crushed, a nutritious porridge is prepared.

Collection

The whole lichen is collected exclusively in wet weather, during the whole year, ie. while weather conditions allow it. Before drying, it is necessary to clean it from various impurities (earth, conifer needles, etc.) and dry it in the shade.
