It has quadrangular and strongly branched stem, 60 cm high. The ovate leaves, serrated and sparsely hairy, are located opposite to eachother, on long stems. The flowers are white or white-yellow, and are found in vertebrate inflorescences, in the axils of the upper leaves. The whole plant, especially when the leaf is crushed, gives off a strong, very pleasant moris reminiscent of lemon, and is known as "lemon-grass". It blooms in June and August.

Lemon balm tea has a beneficial effect on insomnia caused by fatigue.
The leaves are collected before flowering, and the whole plant with the tips and leaves at the time of flowering. It is important to note that, with a minimum of manipulation and touch, the lemon balm must be dried in the shade, quickly and carefully. Dried herb should not be stored in tin boxes.
